Loss and Remembrance during the Holiday Season

The Holiday Season is filled with joy, parties, sparkle and excitement but for most of us it is also a reminder of our loved ones who are no longer with us and the memories we shared with them.

I remember a few years ago when my Aunt Nellie died. A Ukrainian priest at her funeral chanted, “May her memory be eternal.” I thought that would be amazing and wonderful for our memory of this sweet woman  to be eternal.

Please join us for a night of remembering our loved ones, sharing stories of loss, love and wonder. Bring a special story, a memory or a memento and let us light a candle and make the memory of our loved ones…the joys, the sorrows, the love…eternal.

Where: Meet at The Still Place (we will then go to Dawn and Craig’s Home on Julie Mountain)

When: Tuesday, December 20th at 6:30 PM

Light refreshments will be served.

Still Beside You: June

When we are faced with serious illness in ourselves or a loved one, the possibility of death and dying can become more real for all of us.

At The Still Place we have started a year long dedication to gathering monthly to discuss, study, discover, explore and wonder about finding a more thoughtful, peaceful death for ourselves and those we care for as family, caregivers and health care professionals.

Join us on June 14th at 6:30 PM at The Still Place as we discuss the impact of serious illness on teens and their friends and families as we reflect on the novel and movie, The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green.

Hazel Grace Lancaster , a 16-year-old cancer patient, meets and falls in love with Gus Waters, a similarly afflicted teen from her cancer support group. Hazel feels that Gus really understands her. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially Grace’s touchstone, “An Imperial Affliction” by Peter Van Houten. When Gus scores an invitation to meet the reclusive author, he and Hazel embark on the adventure of their brief lives.

We welcome anyone from any path to sit in safety and reflect and share. Please note this is not intended to be grief or bereavement counseling.

The topic for our next discussion is “Death Cafes”. Death Cafes started in Europe several years ago and have taken root in many US communities. Individuals, who often do not know one other, meet at a cafe for an hour or so to discuss death. Some discussion topics might include a person’s stories or experiences, fears, questions or wishes for their own end of their life.

We will be learning about what these gatherings are like by experiencing our own “death cafe.”

Facilitator: Michelle Holmes

Light refreshments will be served.

Please RSVP via email to hannah@thestillplace.org
